Do One Thing Differently

Do you ever feel bad and feel completely stuck? Or, you think, “There is nothing I could do to feel better.” This is a very common side-effect of feeling down or anxious, or of simply having a bad day.

You are not stuck.

There is a trick I have learned along the way and it’s this: DO ONE THING DIFFERENTLY.

That’s right, just do one thing differently. It could be going to a YouTube channel you don’t normally watch, or eating something different than the norm, or listening to a new artist on Spotify, which you haven’t done in a while, or walking outside for one minute when you would normally be inside. It could be creating a beat with your hands, standing up for a minute for a different perspective, or paying close attention to your breathing. The great thing is, you can get creative with whatever this different thing is going to be.

Sometimes when we are feeling bad, we feel stuck and we get in a spiral of difficult thoughts and perhaps routine or fixed behaviors. When we do one thing differently, which by the way, may only take one to three minutes of time, it helps pull us out of that spiral in a very natural way. Some may call it distraction, but it is as simple as engaging with a stimulus that was intentional, instead of falling back into a routine or mindlessness.

This trick really can make a huge impact on our mood, thoughts, feelings and behaviors… AND, how we feel physically. Doing something different in a given moment opens the door to opportunity, and creates a change that may just change our minds.
